  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
  • 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh orange slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Gradually stir in hot coffee.
  3. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. For the orange filling, whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Slowly add orange juice and cook until thickened. Stir in zest and butter; cool completely.
  5. For ganache, heat cream until steaming; pour over chopped chocolate and let sit before stirring until smooth.
  6. Assemble by layering cake with orange filling between each layer and top with ganache.
